Recently I have found out that there has been a serious problem with the TIPM’s in many vehicles from Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, Volkswagen, so much so there has been a class action suit, and talk of a recall. The dealership has diagnosed my vehicle as having a TIPM problem, but quoted me over $1000 to fix it. How do I know that the replaced TIPM won’t go bad, and I will have the same problem as before?
TIPM (pronounced: tip-em, which stands for totally integrated power module) is a programmable computer part, that controls electrical parts in your vehicle. If the TIPM is the problem it can be faulty chips inside or bad programming. The main problems with faulty TIPMs have to do with the original manufactured TIPM’s. Since then all the TIPM’s that are sold are re-manufactured. We have been selling the re-manufactured TIPM’s for 4 years, and have not had an issue with them going bad. In some cases it turns out the TIPM is not the problem, and you are having a different issue in the vehicle. In that case replacing the TIPM will not help with the problem.
Whats the difference between a used, rebuilt, re-manufactured, and new TIPM?
All new TIPM’s are really re-manufactured, if you are going to a dealership and they sell you a new TIPM, its actually from a re-manufacturer. Used is simply used, its a working TIPM (hopefully) that has been used, and no additional work has been done to it. A rebuilt TIPM is a TIPM that had its faulty relays and fuel chips replaced, tested and certified to be working properly.
If I purchase a TIPM on the internet can I replace it myself? And is it just plug and play?
Replacing the TIPM is very simple, if you can use a screwdriver you can replace the TIPM. We have videos on our website, that show how to remove the old TIPM, and put in the new one. Once the TIPM is replaced you will need to do a hard reset, this too is very simple, and we provide TIPM reset procedure instructions with each part we send out
